Convection (CAPE)

Convective Available Potential Energy in J/kg — the thunderstorm fuel. <100 = stable atmosphere, 100–500 = isolated showers possible, 500–1,000 = ordinary summer thunderstorms, 1,000–2,000 = strong storms with hail risk, >2,000 = severe / supercell environment.

CAPE alone doesn't tell you whether storms will fire — you need to know the cap (CIN). Even 3,000 J/kg with strong CIN can stay quiet until late afternoon, then release explosively. Use the CAPE/CIN meteogram panel for hour-by-hour detail at a specific airfield.
