About ClearToFly

ClearToFly is a free, high-resolution weather visualization tool for manned VFR aviation — general aviation pilots (Motorflug), glider pilots (Segelflug, vol à voile), and ultralight pilots flying in Central Europe. It is not a drone-flight service, and it is not an aerospace maintenance / MRO business.

Core value: resolution and recency. A 2.1 km grid of ~542,000 cells covering most of Europe, refreshed within minutes of each new run of the German Weather Service's ICON-D2 model.

Data sources

ClearToFly combines DWD ICON-D2 with two lower-resolution models to extend the forecast horizon:

Hours 0–14: ICON-D2 RUC (Rapid Update Cycle) — hourly updates, 15-minute time steps.
Hours 15–48: ICON-D2 — full run every 3 hours, 2.1 km resolution.
Hours 49–120: ICON-EU — European-scale ~7 km model, extends to 5 days.
Hours 121–360: ECMWF Open Data (IFS HRES & AIFS) — global 0.25° model, extends selected products to 15 days. CC-BY-4.0.

Privatpilotenlounge #149"Wetter entscheidet — warum VFR-Piloten häufiger falsch liegen". Long-form discussion of how VFR pilots underestimate weather and how tools like ClearToFly close the gap between DWD raw model data and cockpit decisions.

Who builds this

ClearToFly is a one-person project by Jan Schaffner, a private pilot based in Germany. The service is free. If you find it useful, you can buy me a coffee. Feedback is welcome — see the ⓘ button in the top-right of any map page.
